Carved in Stone
18×24 oil on canvas. The year after I was married we had a family reunion with my husband’s family to Yellowstone National Park. On our way to one of the camp grounds, I saw a moose for the first time in my life. It was only a young one on skinny legs, but I was amazed by how big it still was! Then we got in the park and we saw some mature ones there. HOLY SMOKES! They are incredible animals! When I started painting I knew a moose would have to be one of my first animals that I would paint. I painted it with the towering Grand Tetons overlooking a beautiful fall afternoon. The river and the surrounding banks and trees aren’t actually like that near The Tetons. I used many different reference photos to put together the scene surrounding the moose. There is one hidden thing in this one, sorry, it’s pretty obvious. It’s all in a name.
